Realidad Visual began in the early 2000s as a platform for creating socially engaged multimedia projects and soon evolved into a civil association dedicated to promoting media arts in Peru. Over nearly a decade, it produced documentaries, organized electronic art exhibitions, and oversaw the Festival Internacional de Video y Artes Electrónicas (VAE), extending its activities beyond Lima.
Realidad Visual fostered experimentation, critical thought, and collaboration among emerging and established artists, supporting initiatives such as “Sirenética,” “Videamoro,” and the online platform Culturaperu.org. It also published the free magazine “Distancia Crítica,” aiming to spark dialogue and broaden cultural participation throughout the country.
Operating without stable public or private funding, its members relied on personal resources, determination, and alliances with like-minded groups. Realidad Visual’s work paved the way for new forms of cultural activism and advanced digital arts in Peru before ceasing operations in 2010, leaving a lasting legacy in Peru’s cultural landscape.
